1. Scope
This policy covers everything under the ScrollMute name: the website at scrollmute.com, the waitlist, the Chrome extension, and any future iPhone, Android, macOS, or Windows apps. We call all of these "the Services."
Today, the Chrome extension is the core product. It runs locally in your browser. Account-based sync and cross-device features are being built. This policy covers both what exists now and what is coming.
2. What We Collect
Chrome Extension — Local-First
The extension stores everything locally. Your settings, toggle states, runtime data, and any local insights — distractions removed, feed visits prevented, focus-mode time, session recaps — all live in chrome.storage.local on your device. None of it is sent to a ScrollMute server.
The extension requests the storage permission and host access for x.com, twitter.com, youtube.com, and reddit.com so it can hide distracting elements on those pages. That is the full extent of what the extension does.
Information You Give Us Directly
When you join the waitlist, contact us, request support, or eventually create an account, you share information with us — your name, email, password, or whatever you include in your message. We collect what you give us. Nothing more.
Account and Sync (When Available)
When account features launch, we will store account identifiers, authentication records, security settings, and synced preferences so your ScrollMute setup works across devices.
Technical Information
Depending on the service, we collect standard technical data: device and browser type, app version, OS, language, time zone. This keeps things running, helps us debug, and lets us improve the product.
Support Records
If you contact us, we keep records of the conversation so we can actually help you.
3. How We Use It
Short version: we use your information to make ScrollMute work and to make it better. Specifically:
- Run, maintain, and secure the Services
- Create and manage accounts, authenticate users
- Sync your settings and preferences across devices
- Apply the rules, presets, and focus controls you set
- Respond to support requests
- Send waitlist updates, onboarding, and service messages
- Debug issues, prevent abuse, and improve reliability
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms
We do not sell your data. We do not use it for ad targeting. If that ever changes, we will update this policy before it happens.
4. Legal Bases
If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, here is how we justify processing your data:
- Contract. We process data to deliver the Services you signed up for — account access, settings sync, support.
- Legitimate interests. We secure, maintain, and improve the Services in ways that are proportionate and privacy-respecting.
- Consent. Where required — optional communications or specific data practices we ask you to agree to.
- Legal obligation. Where the law requires us to retain, disclose, or process information.
5. Who We Share With
We share your data with no one for advertising. Here are the narrow exceptions:
- Service providers that help us run hosting, authentication, email, support, security, or infrastructure
- App stores and platform providers where necessary to distribute or support the Services
- Legal requirements — when required by law, legal process, or to protect rights, safety, or security
- Corporate events — in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with appropriate confidentiality protections
We do not share authentication credentials, payment credentials, or comparable sensitive account information publicly.
6. International Transfers
ScrollMute uses service providers that may operate outside your country. When we transfer personal data outside the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, we use an appropriate transfer mechanism — such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses — or another lawful basis.
7. Data Retention
We keep data only as long as we need it.
- Waitlist and marketing data: retained until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.
- Account and synced settings: retained while your account is active, plus a limited period for security, fraud prevention, and legal compliance.
- Local Chrome extension data: stays on your device. Remove it by resetting settings in the extension or uninstalling it.
8. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you have rights over your data — access, correction, deletion, export, restriction, or objection to processing. Here is how to exercise them:
- Account deletion. When accounts are available, delete through the app or web portal. We may retain limited data for security, fraud prevention, or legal compliance.
- Local extension. Adjust or reset settings inside the product, or uninstall the extension entirely.
- Marketing emails. Unsubscribe anytime via the link in the email or by contacting us.
- Privacy requests. Email us at hello@scrollmute.com for access, deletion, correction, or export.
9. Children
ScrollMute is not directed to children under the age at which parental consent is required. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children in violation of applicable law.
10. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration. No system is perfectly secure — we cannot guarantee absolute security — but we take it seriously.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy. When we make material changes, we update the "Last Updated" date and provide notice through the website, apps, or extension where required.
